The van Arendonk family has been involved in the shoe trade for hundreds of years. In 1884 Jan van Arendonk saw, after the death of his father, placed at the head of a very modest shoemaker. There was slumbering in him a rarely strong, energetic will and restless energy. He went to work diligently and in a few years the sturdy worker was allowed to taste the pleasure of having turned the modest workshop into a sizable factory, where, under his personal leadership, about 150 workers were employed. Under his capable leadership, production was steadily increased and in 1905 the factory was already producing 2,700 shoes a week.
